The Devil and Tom Walker

 The Devil and Tom Walker

As I read “The Devil and Tom Walker,” I was wondering why he, Tom, would even strike a deal with the devil. As always, it is because of greed. He wants nothing more but to get rich and probably leave his horrible wife. It is also funny how his wife has more control than him. She would even beat him up. There was also part in the story about how a young man would pass the house while hearing screams of the man getting beaten up. The young man was thankful for not being married. Anyways, the description of the setting was incredibly detailed. You could almost see everything and it instills fear to the readers. I found out more about how the man was actually really greedy. He was “worried about the fate of his wife and PROPERTY…” This was really straight to the point about how greedy and how he hates his wife is. He was not even worried when he found the woman’s apron containing a liver and heart. Tom then searched for the Devil to strike a deal. The conditions are that Tom must become a loaner and then squeeze the money out of the people to get Kidd’s treasure. He did this and he made great friend during his business that he then broke when the time comes to collect the money back. He got their land, houses and many more. He tried to trick the devil by going to church and becoming a member of a church. He always carried a bible to protect himself from the devil and he even had notes inside the bible just in case he had to conduct a business. One day he forgot the bible, of course, and the devil got him and carried him off with a black horse. He was then trampled to death and never be seen again. Until, people are saying that the ghost of the man riding a horse can still be seen. I thought that when I read that he died, his wealth would be used for good but of course not. His wealth was burned to ashes. It’s as if he was never even rich. Well, I guess that the moral of this story is that don’t be so greedy that you would sell your soul to the devil.
